Understanding the Bible's Teaching on Suicide

The Bible does not provide a direct answer to the question of suicide, but it does offer insights that can help us understand why suicide is wrong. The Bible teaches that life is a gift from God, and we are not the owners of our bodies (1 Corinthians 6:12). This means that we have a responsibility to take care of our lives and not to intentionally take our own lives. The Bible also teaches that suicide is a sin, not because it is a murder, but because it is a rejection of God's gift of life and a failure to trust in God's sovereignty over our lives.

The Consequences of Suicide

The Bible teaches that those who commit suicide will not be punished in the same way as those who commit murder, but they will still be accountable to God for their actions. The Bible tells us that the believer's body is the temple of God, and that suicide is a violation of this sacred trust (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). While the Bible does not teach that suicide is an unpardonable sin, it does teach that it is a serious sin that requires repentance and God's forgiveness. The Hope of the Gospel

The Bible teaches that the gospel of Jesus Christ is the hope of the world, and that it offers a way of escape from the pain and suffering of life. The Bible teaches that Jesus Christ died on the cross, not just to save us from our sins, but also to give us hope in the midst of suffering. The Bible teaches that those who commit suicide will still be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames (1 Corinthians 3:15). This means that even in the midst of great suffering, there is still hope, and that we do not have to resort to suicide to escape our pain. Instead, we can trust in God's sovereignty and goodness, and find hope in the gospel of Jesus Christ.
