Can I Still Find Hope in the Darkness?

The darkness of hopelessness can be overwhelming, and it's natural to wonder if there's any hope left. The Bible reminds us that hope is one of the theological virtues, and it's not a form of escapism or wishful thinking, but rather a continuous looking forward to the eternal world (1 Corinthians 13:13). Hope finds its anchor in Christ, who is our consolation in suffering and our protest against the darkness (Romans 5:3-4). In Christ, we find the hope that our present struggles are not the end, but rather a refining process that will lead to ultimate fulfillment.

The Bible teaches us that our hopes are not our own, but are rooted in the sovereignty and power of God. Without faith in God's wisdom, sovereignty, and power, hope is a chimera (Hebrews 11:1). But when we entrust ourselves to the ultimate reality of the triune God, we are strengthened with hope rather than despair. This hope is not just a feeling, but a skill that develops over time, and it's a corporate venture that needs the reminders of the body of Christ. By committing ourselves to a church where the story of hope is told and seeking opportunities for daily reminders, we can cultivate a sense of hope that reaches beyond our present struggles.

In the darkness of hopelessness, it's tempting to try to kill hope or pretend that it doesn't exist. But this only leads to a life of numbness and disconnection. Instead, we can choose to nurture hope by trusting in God's goodness and sovereignty. We can look to the resurrection of Jesus as the ultimate answer to a hopeless world, and we can find comfort in the fact that our present struggles are not the end, but rather a refining process that will lead to ultimate fulfillment. As we look to the future, we can say with hope, "I will trust in the Lord my God" (Psalm 38:22). This hope is not a guarantee of happiness or success, but it's a declaration of trust in God's goodness, even in the midst of darkness.
