Can I still find peace when I feel like I'm drowning in debt?
Finding Peace Amidst Financial Stress
When you feel like you're drowning in debt, it can be overwhelming and debilitating. It's natural to wonder if you can still find peace in the midst of financial struggles. The Bible has much to say about living a life of obedience to God, even when it's difficult. In Romans 13:1, it's written, "Render all due obedience to the civil authorities. They in their way are servants of God." This verse reminds us that we are to submit to the authorities in our lives, including those who govern our finances.
However, it's not just about obeying external authorities. We must also cultivate a deep sense of inner peace and contentment, regardless of our circumstances. This is what Jesus refers to as "the quiet contentment of the Lord Jesus" (Psalm 119:165). When we reflect His peace, it's a sign that we are right with God and that we are free to turn our minds to Him. In times of financial stress, it's easy to feel like we're drowning, but we must not let our circumstances define us. Instead, we must look up to God and receive His peace. This is not something that can be taught in a book, but must be experienced. As Paul writes in Ephesians 4:3, "Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace."
In the midst of financial struggles, it's easy to feel like we're at the end of our rope. We may feel like we're in a crisis of the will, where we're forced to make difficult choices and sacrifices. However, it's in these moments that we must remember that God is sovereign over all creation, including our finances. He is the one who provides for us and gives us peace, even in the midst of chaos. As we seek to live a life that reflects Christian values and teachings, we must remember that our one continuing debt is the debt of love. We must learn to live with no sense of entitlement or being owed anything, but instead, we must seek to obey God and trust in His goodness, even when it's difficult. As we do, we will begin to experience the peace and fulfillment that comes from living a life surrendered to God.
