What does hope look like in the darkness?

The concept of hope is a complex and multifaceted one, often shrouded in uncertainty and doubt. In the darkness, hope can seem like an illusion, a fleeting dream that vanishes at the first sign of reality. Many people struggle to find hope in the face of adversity, and it's not uncommon for hope to be crushed by the weight of disappointment and despair. However, the Bible teaches us that hope is not just a feeling or an emotion, but a fundamental aspect of our relationship with God. It is the confident expectation that God will act in our lives, even in the midst of darkness and uncertainty.

In the book of Job, we see a powerful example of hope in the darkness. Job, a righteous man who suffers greatly, expresses a desire to be revived and to hear God's voice calling to him (Job 14:14-15). Despite his suffering, Job's heart remains fixed on God, and he is able to speak of hope in the midst of darkness. This hope is not based on his own strength or resilience, but on his trust in God's goodness and sovereignty. Similarly, in the New Testament, we see that Jesus is the source of hope in the darkness. As the Messiah, Jesus brings fulfillment to Old Testament hopes and gives us a foretaste of the consummated kingdom that will dawn when he returns.

So what does hope look like in the darkness? It looks like a trust in God's goodness and sovereignty, even when we don't understand what's happening. It looks like a desire to be revived and to hear God's voice calling to us. It looks like a confidence that God will act in our lives, even in the midst of uncertainty and doubt. And it looks like Jesus, the Messiah who brings hope to a hopeless world. As the apostle Paul writes, "For I know that my redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand on the earth. And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God" (Job 19:25-26). This is the hope that we can cling to, even in the darkness.
