Your Question:

What do I do with the fear of death?

Answer:

As a pastor, I've dealt with many people who struggle with the fear of death. It's natural to fear the unknown, especially when it comes to the end of our life. But Jesus tells us to fear Him who has authority to throw us into hell, not death itself. He's saying that our fear should be directed towards God, not the limitations of human power.

When we fear God, He promises to deliver us from our enemies, protect us from evil, and show us mercy. He also promises to supply everything we need and reveal all we need to know. This is the kind of fear that leads to faith, not the kind that paralyzes us. As I reflect on my own life, I realize that my fear of death is not just about the unknown, but also about the thought of leaving behind my family, particularly my wife Susan and our children, Joshua and Rebecca. But I've come to understand that God's love and promise are greater than any fear I may have.

As I counsel others and myself, I remind us to confront our fears head-on and examine Scripture for reassurance. We should confess our fears as unbelief and ask someone who is confident in Jesus to give reasons for their confidence. By doing so, we can quiet our fears and replace them with faith in God's love and faithfulness. This is not to say that the fear of death will completely disappear, but it will no longer be the dominant force in our lives.
