Why did I have to lose my retirement savings and my sense of security?

Losing one's retirement savings and sense of security can be a devastating experience. It can make one question their financial decisions, their understanding of security, and even their faith. However, from a biblical perspective, such experiences can be seen as opportunities for growth and reflection.

The Bible teaches us that true security comes from God, not from material wealth or possessions. As the psalmist says, "Never will I leave you, never will I forsake you" (Hebrews 13:5). This verse reminds us that our security is not based on what we own or accumulate, but on our relationship with God. When we put our trust in material wealth, we are setting ourselves up for disappointment and disillusionment. As the Bible says, "Wealth quickly fades, like a mist that vanishes in the morning" (Proverbs 31:6). This is not to say that we should not work hard and provide for ourselves, but rather that we should not put our ultimate trust in what we can accumulate.

Losing one's retirement savings and sense of security can be a wake-up call to re-evaluate our priorities and values. It can prompt us to ask ourselves if we have been chasing after the wrong things in life. As the Bible says, "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven" (Matthew 6:19-20). This means that we should not be focused on accumulating wealth and possessions, but rather on building relationships, cultivating character, and growing in our faith. By doing so, we can find true security and peace, even in the midst of financial uncertainty. Ultimately, our security and peace come from God, and not from what we own or accumulate.
