How do I prioritize my debt?
Prioritizing debt can be a challenging task, but I believe it's essential to tackle it head-on. As a pastor, I've seen many people struggle with debt, and it's not just a financial issue, but also a spiritual one. God wants us to be good stewards of our finances, and debt can be a burden that weighs us down. When my wife Susan and I pray about our finances, we commit them to God and ask for His guidance.
To prioritize debt, I'd recommend starting with the snowball method. This involves listing all your debts, from smallest to largest, and focusing on paying off the smallest one first. Once you've paid off that debt, use the money you were paying on it to tackle the next smallest debt, and so on. This approach can be motivating, as you see progress being made quickly. Additionally, it's essential to avoid taking on new debt while paying off existing debts. As the Bible says, "Do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you" (Matthew 5:42), but be wise and discerning in your lending.
It's also crucial to identify and avoid cosigning or taking on debt that's not essential. As the Bible warns, "Do not pledge your property as security for a friend's debt" (Proverbs 22:26). By being mindful of our spending and avoiding unnecessary debt, we can free ourselves from the burden of debt and live more generously, trusting God to provide for our needs. By following these principles, we can take control of our finances and prioritize our debt in a way that honors God.
