When love is tested, what does it reveal about our true nature?

When love is tested, it reveals the true nature of our hearts. This is because love is not a natural trait for human beings in their fallen state. As 1 John 4:8 states, "God is love," and we are created in His image, but our fallen nature often gets in the way of expressing true love. When we are put in situations where our love is tested, it reveals whether we are living a life that reflects our new birth in Christ or if we are still struggling with our old sinful nature. This is why the Bible says that love is the final objective test of our Christian profession (1 John 3:17).

True love, in the sense of self-sacrifice, is not something that comes naturally to us. It requires a willingness to put others before ourselves, to forgive, and to serve. When we are tested, it reveals whether we are willing to do these things, even when it's hard. As Jesus said, "Love your neighbor as yourself" (Mark 12:31). When we are put in situations where we have to choose between loving others or loving ourselves, it reveals our true nature. If we choose to love others, even when it's difficult, it shows that we are living a life that reflects our love for God and for others. On the other hand, if we choose to love ourselves, it reveals that we are still struggling with our old sinful nature.

Are we more patient and less frustrated? Are we kinder, gentler, and softer with time? These are the qualities of a life that is guided by the Spirit, and when we are tested, it reveals whether we are living a life that reflects these qualities. As the Bible says, "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud" (1 Corinthians 13:4). When love is tested, it reveals whether we are living a life that reflects these qualities, and whether we are truly living a life that is guided by the Spirit.
