Your Question:
How do I balance my faith and my feelings?
Answer:
As a pastor, I've seen many people struggle with balancing their faith and feelings, especially during difficult times. It's easy to become suspicious or passive when life gets tough, but that's not what faith is about. Faith is about trusting God, not just when things are going well, but also when they're not. As the Bible says, "Faith is not just receiving from God what you want; faith is the ability to accept what He gives and glorify Him in all circumstances." To balance our faith and feelings, we need to make a conscious effort to do so. We must train ourselves to recognize when our moods are changing and to make sure that our faith is not dependent on our emotions. As the Bible says, "Unless you teach your moods where they get off, you can never be either a sound Christian or even a sound atheist, but just a creature dithering to and fro, with its beliefs really dependent on the weather and the state of its digestion." We need to ground our faith in the Word of God, not just in how we feel. For me, as a pastor and a husband and father, this means being intentional about my faith and making a commitment to regularly attend a Bible-teaching church and to study God's Word. It also means being a good example to my family and to those I serve, and trusting God even when things don't go as planned. As the Bible says, "Faith is not based on any victory you've ever won. Your faith is based on the Word of God." By trusting in God's Word, we can keep our faith strong, even in the midst of difficult circumstances.
