The Problem of Suffering: Why Do We Get Sick?

The question of why we get sick, especially when we feel like we're getting our lives back together, is a complex one. From a biblical perspective, sickness is not necessarily a direct result of sin. While the Jews of the day believed that all sickness was due to sin (John 9:2), the Bible teaches that suffering is a part of living in a fallen world. As the apostle Paul wrote, "We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope" (Romans 5:3-4). This means that even as Christians, we can expect to face trials and difficulties in life.

However, this doesn't mean that God is somehow absent or uncaring when we suffer. Rather, God is sovereign over all creation, including the natural world, and He allows us to experience suffering as part of His plan to conform us to the image of Christ (Romans 8:28-30). This doesn't mean that we have to like it or that it's not painful, but it does mean that we can trust that God is working everything out for our good. As the Bible says, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28).

So, why do we get sick, especially when we feel like we're getting our lives back together? The answer is not a simple one, but it's rooted in the biblical teaching that we live in a fallen world where things can go wrong. As the apostle Peter wrote, "Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery trial that has come on you, as if something strange were happening to you" (1 Peter 4:12). Instead of being surprised or angry, we can trust that God is working everything out for our good, even when we're struggling with sickness or other challenges.
