Can a person still be a good Christian if they struggle with shame?

Shame is a feeling of being defined by our sin and shortcomings, whereas guilt acknowledges our sinfulness. The Bible teaches that Christians should not experience shame, but rather, should be able to admit their guilt without shame (1 John 1:8-9). Shame can lead to hiding from God and others, and can cause us to feel marred and damaged beyond repair. In contrast, guilt can lead to repentance and a desire to change. Shame is a destructive force that can cause us to feel unworthy and unlovable, whereas God's love and acceptance can make us radiant and reflective of His light and love.

As Christians, we should strive for humility and admit that none of us have ever climbed out of the mire of sin with our own moral bootstraps. We should confess our sins to God and seek His forgiveness, rather than trying to hide from Him. This is not about restoring something to someone we have wronged, but about restoring our relationship with God. Grace has the power to destroy shame and make us feel worthy and lovable again. When we look to the Lord, we are radiant and reflecting His light and love.

In order to overcome shame, we need to understand that it is not a present experience, but rather a future consequence of not following God's ways. The Bible teaches that those who do not follow God's ways will experience shame and humiliation (Psalm 3:5-7, Philippians 3:19). However, for Christians, shame should not be a present experience, but rather a motivator for repentance and change. By acknowledging our guilt and seeking God's forgiveness, we can overcome shame and live a life that reflects God's love and acceptance.
