Why did I have to go through this when I'm supposed to be blessed?
When we face difficult circumstances, it's natural to wonder why we're experiencing them, especially if we feel like we're supposed to be blessed. The Bible reminds us that we should examine our own hearts and actions to see if there have been any "particular wilful sins" that may have driven God away (1 Peter 4:14). We may be so focused on what we're not getting that we forget to consider how God is still blessing us. Perhaps we're even comparing ourselves to others, thinking God is blessing them more than us. But God's blessing is not a competition; it's a personal relationship with Him.
The Devil often uses suffering to convince us that God isn't good, that He hasn't blessed us, or that He doesn't love us. But the Bible says, "Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the Lord" (Psalm 119:1). This means that even in the midst of suffering, we can still be blessed if we walk in obedience to God's law. We may not be experiencing physical healing or material prosperity, but we can still be blessed in our spirits, our relationships, or our character. As the apostle Peter says, "If you are reproached for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the spirit of glory and of God rests upon you" (1 Peter 4:14).
In fact, our suffering can be an opportunity for growth and increased intimacy with God. When we pray, we can ask God to help us see our struggles as a chance to increase our capacity for joy in all circumstances. We can also ask God to help us pour out blessings to others, rather than keeping them to ourselves. As Jesus said, "I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.... Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them" (John 13:15, 17). By following Jesus' example and doing what He has done, we can experience the blessing of God in our lives.
