The Question of Suffering: A Biblical Perspective

The question of where God is in our suffering is a universal and deeply personal inquiry. It is a question that Job, the biblical character, also grappled with. He said, "Behold, I go forward, but he is not there; and backward, but I cannot perceive him; on the left hand I seek him, but I cannot find him" (Job 23:8-9). Job's experience of suffering and his search for God in the midst of it is a poignant reminder that this question is not unique to us. In fact, it is a question that has puzzled and haunted humanity for centuries.

God's Presence in Suffering: A Biblical Answer

The Bible offers a profound answer to this question. In the midst of suffering, God is not absent or indifferent. He is actively present, working to bring about good even in the midst of evil. As C. S. Lewis wrote, "God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world." (The Problem of Pain) This is not to say that suffering is good or that God causes it. Rather, it is to say that God is present in our suffering, working to bring about redemption and transformation. As the apostle Paul wrote, "We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope" (Romans 5:3-4).

A Loving God in a Suffering World

The question of why a loving God allows suffering is a complex and multifaceted one. However, the biblical answer is clear: God is not distant or uncaring. He is actively present in our suffering, working to bring about good and redemption. As Jesus, the God-man, said, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" (Matthew 27:46). In this moment of ultimate suffering, Jesus was not abandoned by God. Rather, he was experiencing the full weight of God's presence, even in the midst of pain and despair. This is the mystery of the cross, where love, holiness, and suffering combine to bring about redemption and transformation. Through our struggles and pain, we are being offered perseverance, the character of God, and the hope of eternal life. As the apostle Paul wrote, "If we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself" (2 Timothy 2:13). God is present in our suffering, working to bring about good and redemption.
