Understanding the Paradox of Helping Others

The Bible teaches that helping others is not only a noble act, but also a good thing for us. Jesus said, "It is more blessed to give than to receive" (Acts 20:35). However, the desire to help others can sometimes be motivated by selfish reasons, such as a desire to feel good about ourselves or to gain recognition. This can lead to a self-centered focus, rather than a others-centered focus. The Bible warns against this, saying, "For we are not to be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of our mind, that we may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God" (Romans 12:2).

Balancing Desire to Help with Own Needs

To balance our desire to help others with our own needs, we must first recognize that we are not self-sufficient and that we need help from others. The Bible says, "Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion" (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10). We need to be willing to receive help from others, just as we are willing to give help to others. This means being humble and recognizing our own limitations and weaknesses. It also means being willing to ask for help when we need it, rather than trying to do everything on our own.

The Power of Generosity

When we give to others, we are not just giving them something, we are also giving ourselves. We are giving ourselves the opportunity to grow in our relationship with God and to experience the joy of giving. The Bible says, "Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you" (Luke 6:38). When we give generously to others, we are not just helping them, we are also helping ourselves to become more like God and to experience the joy and freedom that comes from living a life of generosity. By giving to others, we are not only meeting their needs, but also our own. We are giving ourselves the opportunity to experience the joy of giving and to grow in our relationship with God. This is the power of generosity.
