Can I Still Have a Life after Disability?

The Fall and Suffering

In the Bible, we see that suffering and disability are a result of the Fall of humanity. The consequences of Adam and Eve's disobedience to God's command are far-reaching, affecting every area of human life, including our physical bodies. This perspective can sometimes lead people to view disability as a terrible consequence that must be endured. However, this perspective does not adequately account for the transforming power of the gospel.

The Gospel and Suffering

The good news of the gospel is that God is not a distant, uncaring God, but a loving and compassionate God who is actively involved in our lives. Through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, God has demonstrated His power to overcome even the most difficult circumstances. As Christians, we have the privilege of experiencing this transforming power in our own lives, including in the midst of suffering and disability. The Bible teaches us that our suffering is not a punishment from God, but rather an opportunity for us to trust in Him and to experience His presence and love in a deeper way.

A Life Worth Living

The question of whether a person with a disability can still have a life worth living is often answered with a resounding "yes." Many people with disabilities have found joy, happiness, and fulfillment in their lives, despite their physical limitations. In fact, studies have shown that the suicide rate among people with disabilities is virtually zero, and many people with disabilities report being happy with their lives. As Christians, we believe that our value and worth come from our relationship with God, not from our physical abilities. Therefore, we can say with confidence that a person with a disability can still have a life worth living, a life that is full of purpose, meaning, and joy, even in the midst of suffering. By trusting in God and experiencing His love and presence, we can find hope and encouragement, even in the darkest of circumstances. As one person with Down syndrome said, "I am happy with my life."17 This is a testimony to the transformative power of the gospel and the value and worth that every person, regardless of their abilities, has in the eyes of God.
