Understanding the Paradox of Losing Oneself in Faith

The feeling of losing one's sense of self, faith, and identity is a common experience that many people face, especially when they embark on a journey of spiritual growth. The paradox of losing oneself in following Christ is that it actually leads to true self-discovery. This is because true self-denial is true self-discovery. When we surrender ourselves to Christ, we begin to understand our true nature and identity, which is rooted in our relationship with Him. As the Bible says, "You have an old self and a new self (Ephesians 4:24). The old self is crippled with anxieties, the need to prove yourself, bad habits, and wrong thinking. But the new self is being renewed in the image of its creator" (Ephesians 4:24).

The Importance of Surrendering to Christ

Surrendering to Christ is the key to finding ourselves and our true identity. When we abandon ourselves to Him, we begin to experience a deeper level of faith and understanding. This surrender is not just about emotional enjoyment of His blessings, but about living a life of faith, which is centered on a direct relationship with God. As the Bible says, "It is only through abandonment of yourself and your circumstances that you will find yourself and your true identity" (emphasis added). This surrender is not a one-time event, but a continuous process of surrendering ourselves to Christ, moment by moment, day by day.

Overcoming Obstacles to Faith

When we face obstacles to faith, such as depression, discouragement, or overwhelming circumstances, it's essential to remember that faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God (Romans 10:17). We need to pray specifically about any obstacle in our life, asking for Christ to enlighten us, give us strength to overcome, and lead us to a deeper understanding of His will. As Jesus said, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent" (John 6:29). By surrendering ourselves to Christ and focusing on our relationship with Him, we can overcome obstacles to faith and experience a deeper level of faith, identity, and self-discovery. Ultimately, it's not about what we do, but about Jesus Christ and what He has done and is still doing in our lives.
