Your Question:
what do i tell my kids when they ask why we can't afford the things they want?
Answer:
As a father of two kids, Joshua and Rebecca, I've learned that it's essential to teach them the value of money and the importance of being good stewards of what God has given us. When they ask why we can't afford the things they want, I explain it to them in a way that they can understand. I remind them that everything we have comes from God's hand, and we're privileged to partner with Him as trustworthy stewards. I also make sure to teach them basic biblical and practical concepts about finances, such as making a budget, sticking to it, and staying out of debt. I want them to know that paying bills on time matters and that credit and debit cards should be used wisely. By doing so, I'm equipping them with the knowledge and skills they need to make wise financial decisions in the future. I also give them age-appropriate chores to do, so they can earn money and understand the value of hard work and responsibility. As they work and earn money, I encourage them to give a portion of it to God as an act of obedience and gratitude. This teaches them the value of giving and helps them develop an attitude of gratitude for what they have. I also remind them that just because they can't have everything they want doesn't mean we don't love them. I tell them, "My child, you know that I love you and want only the best for you. I know that what I'm doing now will help you become a responsible and wise adult in the future."
