The Nature of Love in the Face of Uncertainty

When love is tested in the face of uncertainty, it can be a challenging and excruciating experience. As Jimi Jamison of the group Survivor notes, deciding when feelings have reached the right level is not easy, and any uncertainty is excruciating because so much depends on guessing correctly. In this sense, love is put to the test, and we are forced to confront our own doubts and uncertainties.

The Social Test: Love

The social test of love, as discussed in 2 Corinthians 13:3, involves loving others in a way that reflects our relationship with God. This means that our love for others is rooted in our faith and trust in God, and is characterized by confidence before God and a deep love for other believers. When we love others, we are likely to love with strings attached, and this can be a source of uncertainty. However, as the Bible teaches, love keeps no record of wrongs, and lack of love manifests itself when a count is taken of wrongdoing.

The Importance of Trust and Assurance

In the face of uncertainty, trust and assurance are essential for navigating the tests of love. As the Bible teaches, love never fails, and our faith and trust in God give us the assurance we need to navigate uncertain situations. When we trust in God, we are able to overcome our doubts and uncertainties, and to love others in a way that reflects our relationship with God. This is not to say that we will never experience uncertainty or doubt, but rather that our trust and assurance in God will give us the strength and confidence we need to navigate these challenges and to love others in a way that is true to our relationship with God.
