Why Death Entered the World

Death entered the world as a consequence of Adam's sin, the first human to disobey God's command. According to the biblical account, God created Adam and Eve perfect, but they chose to disobey God's command not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. As a result, they experienced spiritual death, or eternal separation from God, and physical death, or the death of the body, became a reality for humanity.

The Consequences of Sin

The sin of Adam and Eve had far-reaching consequences, including the loss of stability of life, disease, and ultimately, death. The Bible teaches that death is a natural consequence of sin, and that it was not present in the world before Adam's disobedience. The Genesis account describes the world as a place of perfect life and harmony before sin entered, but after Adam's sin, the world became a place of suffering and death.

The Purpose of Death

The purpose of death is not to frustrate human experience or to diagonalize inadequate attitudes towards death, but rather to serve as a consequence of sin. The Bible teaches that death is a natural part of the human experience, and that it is a reminder of the consequences of sin. However, through faith in Jesus Christ, death can be seen as a transition from the realm of darkness to the kingdom of light, and believers can be raised to walk in newness of life. As sharers in Christ's death, burial, and resurrection, believers have been raised to new life, citizens of the new world, and are no longer subject to the power of sin and death.
