Why did God abandon me when I needed him most?
When we experience suffering, it's natural to wonder why God has abandoned us. We may question His existence, His power, or His desire to help us. However, this perspective often stems from a faulty theology of suffering. We may assume that God's primary goal is to make us happy and comfortable, and that He should therefore heal us or remove our suffering. But the Bible tells us that God's purposes are often mysterious and not necessarily aligned with our expectations. As Psalm 22:1 says, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Even Jesus, the Son of God, cried out in anguish on the cross, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" (Matthew 27:46).
The problem with our assumption is that it's based on a self-centered view of God's love. We think that God should act in a way that makes us happy, but this ignores the fact that God's love is not just about making us happy, but about conforming us to the image of Christ. Suffering can be a powerful tool in this process, as it encourages us to lean on God and develop character. As the Bible says, "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance" (James 1:2-3). God's purposes are not always about making us happy, but about making us more like Christ.
So, why did God abandon you when you needed Him most? The answer is not necessarily that He didn't love you or that He didn't have the power to help you. The answer may be that He had a greater purpose in mind, one that involved your growth and transformation. As the Bible says, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28). Even in the midst of suffering, we can trust that God is working out His purposes, and that He is using our experiences to shape us into the image of Christ.
