The Definition of Faith

Faith, as the Bible teaches it, is faith in God coming against everything that contradicts Him. It is a faith that says, "I will remain true to God's character whatever He may do." The highest and greatest expression of faith in the whole Bible is Romans 10:17, which says, "So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ." This verse emphasizes that faith is not blind, but rather it is based on God's promises and character.

The Nature of Faith

Faith is not just intellectual assent, but also involves approaching God with confidence in His character and will. It is necessary to have faith in God's power and trust in His character. In Hebrews 11:1, faith is described as the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Biblical faith is never a kind of wishful thinking or a vague hope. Rather, it is putting everything in God's hands and letting Him tell us what to do. As Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 5:7, "We walk by faith, not by sight."

The Importance of Faith

Faith is at the very heart of the gospel, and it is the vehicle by which we are enabled to receive the grace of God. It is the first thing commanded in the Bible, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you shall be saved" (Acts 16:31). Faith is not just a feeling or a sentiment, but a voluntary act of trust in God. It is an affectionate and voluntary act that is proved by the fact that faith works by love (Galatians 5:6). Ultimately, faith is the key to salvation, and it is the means by which we can experience the power of God in our lives. As 1 Peter 1:5 says, "Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." Our faith will not fail while God sustains it, and we are not strong enough to fall away while God is resolved to hold us.
