Is it fair to punish me for my sins?

In the biblical view, punishment for sin is not an injustice, but a necessary consequence of sin. God's justice demands that sin be punished, and if we do not punish sin, we only invite it to continue and harden our hearts (Ps. 32:1-11). Sin establishes itself in the sinner and takes its toll, and God will mete out the punishment it deserves in full measure (Prov. 24:24). We are not just guilty before God because of our sin, but also because of our acceptance of it, and the law will do its work and condemn us if we do not plead pardon (Rom. 3:19-20).

However, it is not God's intention to punish us for our sins. Instead, He offers us forgiveness and mercy through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Christ took upon Himself the guilt of our sins, and we are declared righteous by faith in Him (Rom. 3:24-25). This means that we do not have to undergo the punishment due unto our sin, but rather can be forgiven and set free from its consequences. In fact, God's love for us is so great that He gave His Son to die for us, and we can now say, "He loved me and gave Himself up for me!"

The idea that we should punish ourselves for our sins is a deceptive one. While it may seem like a way to atone for our wrongdoing, it only leads to further guilt and shame. Instead, we should confess our sins to God and others, give thanks for His forgiveness, and ask for power to change. We do not have to pay the penalty for our sins, including past, present, and future sins, because Christ has already paid it for us. We are free to live a new life, one that is marked by love, joy, and freedom from the guilt of our sins. As the Bible says, "Where sin increased, grace increased all the more" (Rom. 5:20).
