How do we show kindness to those around us when we're feeling isolated?
Showing Kindness in the Midst of Isolation
When we're feeling isolated, it can be challenging to show kindness to those around us. However, this is exactly when we need to make an effort to be kind. We can start by putting on a friendly manner, even if we don't feel like it. As Proverbs 4:23 says, "Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life." By choosing to be kind, we can actually change our own hearts and become more friendly.
One way to show kindness is to do something small for someone else. This can be as simple as making a cup of coffee or going somewhere with them. By showing kindness, we can actually win people over to meekness and produce a concern and empathy for other humans. We need to be willing to humble ourselves and accept our purpose, even if it's not what we want. As Hebrews 10:24-25 says, "Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching."
Showing kindness is not just about what we do for others, but also about how we respond to them. When someone is struggling or needs our affection, we should give them tons of hugs, even if they stiffen up or back away. As Virginia Satir's study concluded, people need at least twelve hugs every day to grow and thrive. By choosing to be kind, we can discover true happiness and fulfill our purpose as Christians. We should not use our feelings of isolation as an excuse to withdraw from people who care for us, but rather as an opportunity to show kindness and love to those around us. As Jesus said, "Love your neighbor as yourself" (Mark 12:31). By following this command, we can show kindness to those around us, even when we're feeling isolated.
