Faith Defined

Faith, as the Bible teaches it, is faith in God coming against everything that contradicts Him. It is a faith that says, "I will remain true to God's character whatever He may do." The highest and greatest expression of faith in the whole Bible is faith that rests its confidence in the truth of biblical narratives, not on the critical acumen of the historian, but on the unfailing trustworthiness of God.

The Nature of Faith

The nature of faith is multifaceted, encompassing both intellectual and volitional aspects. On one hand, faith is an intellectual conception, expressed as "I believe that..." (Romans 10:9). On the other hand, faith is also a volitional act, a trust or reliance on God (Galatians 5:6). This is evident in Jesus' words, "Have faith in God" (Mark 11:22), which reiterates the truth that faith is a matter of trust in God's power. Furthermore, faith is an affectionate and voluntary act, demonstrated by the connection between faith and love (1 John 2:20).

The Results of Faith

The results of faith are multifaceted as well. According to the Bible, faith is the means by which one obtains the righteousness of Christ (Romans 5:19). Faith is also the vehicle by which we are enabled to receive the grace of God (Ephesians 2:8). As the Bible teaches, "Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ" (Romans 10:17). In other words, faith is based on the promises and character of God, and it is secured through the use of means, such as reading and hearing the Bible. Ultimately, faith in God is the foundation upon which all of our relationships, decisions, and actions should be built.
