Finding Common Ground with Enemies: A Biblical Perspective

As Christians, we often face opposition and hostility from those who hold differing worldviews or beliefs. In the midst of conflict, it can be tempting to view our enemies as simply that – enemies – and to focus on defeating them rather than finding common ground. However, the Bible teaches us that even in the midst of adversity, we are called to seek common ground and to love our enemies (Matthew 5:44, Luke 6:27-36). This is not to say that we should compromise our values or principles, but rather that we should seek to understand and relate to those with whom we disagree.

One way to find common ground with our enemies is to recognize that, despite our differences, we share a common humanity. As the apostle Paul wrote, "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16). This truth transcends cultural, ideological, and theological boundaries, and provides a foundation for dialogue and understanding. Additionally, we can seek common ground by acknowledging the areas of overlap between our own perspectives and those of our enemies. As the philosopher Alvin Plantinga noted, "Even between two systems there can be enough overlap to allow for dialogue."

Ultimately, finding common ground with our enemies requires a willingness to engage in dialogue and to seek understanding. This can be a challenging and difficult task, but it is one that is essential to building bridges and promoting peace. As the Bible teaches, "Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody" (Romans 12:17). By seeking common ground and treating our enemies with love and respect, we can reflect the character of God and demonstrate the power of the Gospel. In doing so, we may find that even our most ardent opponents become allies in the pursuit of truth and understanding.
