The Elusiveness of Joy

Finding joy in the little things when everything seems overwhelming can be a challenging task. However, the Bible reminds us that joy is a gift from God, and we are free to take joy in the things He has blessed (1 Tim. 6:17). This means that even in the midst of suffering, we can find joy in the simple things like eating, drinking, and working (Eccles. 5:18-20). But, as we strive for joy, we must be careful not to get caught up in attachment and desire, which can lead us to the precipice of suffering. Instead, we can turn to the cross and appreciate the beauty of what Jesus did, which can give us a sense of peace and joy even in the midst of sorrow.

Looking for Joy in Creation

Scripture assumes that we will find joy in creation, but it doesn't emphasize it. However, looking for joy in creation can be a good starting point. As we appreciate the beauty of God's creation, we can experience joy and even taste something of joy in the midst of sorrow. But, there are also barriers and risks that can make it difficult to pursue joy. Depression can be a familiar companion, and it can be challenging to find joy when we are struggling with it. Nevertheless, even in the midst of depression, we can still experience joy, and it can be a powerful antidote to our struggles.

The Power of Joy

Joy is a profound and powerful gift from God, and it is not something that we can manufacture or manipulate. It is not just a shallow pleasure, but a deep and abiding sense of gladness. As we pursue joy, we must be willing to let go of our attachment to things that can bring us suffering. We must also be willing to return to the cross and appreciate the beauty of what Jesus did, which can give us a sense of peace and joy.
