Your Question:
Can I still have a normal life if I'm disabled?
Answer:
As a pastor, I've had the privilege of counseling many individuals who are facing various challenges, including disability. What I've learned is that having a disability doesn't necessarily mean one can't have a normal life. In fact, many people with disabilities lead fulfilling and happy lives. Research has shown that the suicide rate among handicapped people is virtually zero, and 99% of adults with Down syndrome report being happy with their lives. It's also worth noting that people with disabilities can bring great joy and blessings not only to themselves but also to those around them. Caregivers, for instance, often deepen in their compassion and empathy as they care for loved ones with disabilities. This can be a beautiful thing, as it allows us to see the world from a different perspective and appreciate the value of every human life. My own experiences with people who have faced adversity have taught me that it's not about the circumstances we find ourselves in, but about how we choose to respond to them. As the Bible says, "For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." (Jeremiah 29:11) Whether we have a disability or not, we all have the capacity to create meaning and purpose in our lives, and to find joy and fulfillment in the midst of challenges.
