The Dignity of Dependence

The concept of dignity is often tied to independence and autonomy, but what about when we are dependent on others? This is a crucial question, especially in relationships where we may feel like we're losing our sense of self or dignity. The Bible teaches us that our value and worth come from God, not from our own accomplishments or external validation. When we're dependent on others, it's easy to feel like we're losing our dignity, but this is a misconception. Our dignity is not based on our ability to be independent, but on our relationship with God.

The Problem of Self-Dependent Individuals

When we seek to bring order to our internal lives by relying solely on ourselves, we may think we're gaining dignity, but in reality, we're often losing it. We become self-dependent individuals who are trying to control everything, including our relationships with others. This can lead to a sense of isolation and loneliness, as we're not willing to rely on others or submit to their love and care. The Bible teaches us to value others above ourselves, to have the same mindset as Christ Jesus, and to recognize that our worth comes from God, not from our own efforts. In fact, our dependence on others can be a beautiful thing, especially when we're dependent on God. This is not a loss of dignity, but a gain in our relationship with God and with others. As the Bible says, "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests, but each of you to the interests of others" (Philippians 2:3-4). When we're dependent on God and on others, we're not losing our dignity, but gaining a deeper sense of purpose, value, and worth.
