The Gift of Sex: A Creation of God

Sex is indeed a gift from God, and we should accept it with gratitude. The Bible teaches that sex is a creation of God, designed to unite two people in a profound way and enable them to produce something valuable (Genesis 1:28). God did not create sex for no reason, leaving us to make up anything we like. He made sex to fulfill something basic in human nature, satisfying truly and profoundly, even if not in the final and perfect sense that comes only from knowing God himself (Mark 7:14-23). As Markus Barth says, the Bible reveals that sex is neither so great a thing as to make God's blessing, protection, and approval dependent on it, nor is it so insignificant that it is of no consequence.

The Goodness of Sex

The Bible teaches that sex is very good, not just because it is a creation of God, but also because it joins beings made in God's image (Genesis 1:27). Sex is a way to express the love and commitment that exists between two people, and it should be enjoyed in a way that honors God. However, the goodness of sex comes from God, and God defines what is good sex. Good sex never defines God. The Bible never allows using sex in worship either as a way to reach God or as a means of expressing devotion to Him. Instead, sex is a method that God invented to do whole life entrustment and self-giving, which should not surprise us that sex makes us feel deeply connected to the other person, even if not ultimately to God himself.

The Rules of Sex

When it comes to sexual behavior, we need to get more specific. What exactly should we do, or not do, to keep sex holy? Careful examination of scripture reveals there is structure in God's rules for enjoying His gift of sex. The rules are set by the giver, not by what pleases us. Without knowing God well, some people fear that the rules will stifle the pleasure and intimacy of sex. However, the rules are actually designed to protect and preserve the gift of sex, making it possible for us to enjoy it in a way that honors God and brings us closer to Him. By following God's rules for sex, we can experience the full richness and beauty of this gift, and enjoy it in a way that is pleasing to Him.
