The Biblical View of Possessions

The Bible teaches that Christians should view possessions in a specific way. First, our possessions are not our own to keep. As Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 7:25-40, any possessions we own will not belong to us permanently, as the end is coming and we will be leaving this world behind. This eschatological view of possessions reminds us that our focus should be on eternal things, not temporary earthly possessions.

In addition, the Bible teaches that Christians should not be dominated by their possessions. Jesus taught that we cannot serve God and wealth (Matthew 6:24), and that we should not be anxious about our possessions, but rather trust in God's provision (Matthew 6:25-34). This means that we should not let our possessions control us, but rather use them for our spiritual purposes. As Paul wrote, "Let us decorate our souls rather than our houses" (1 Timothy 6:10).

The Bible also teaches that Christians should be content with what they have. Paul wrote, "If we have food and covering, with these we shall be content" (1 Timothy 6:8). This means that we should not be consumed by a desire for more possessions, but rather be thankful for what we have and trust in God's provision. By cultivating an attitude of contentment, we can guard against the temptations of materialism and greed, and focus on what is truly important – our relationship with God and our eternal inheritance in heaven.
