The Christian Perspective on Possessions

Christians should view possessions with a perspective of detachment and stewardship. As the Bible says, "For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ; who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself" (Philippians 3:20-21). This means that our earthly possessions are not our permanent home and should not dominate our lives.

In fact, Jesus teaches us to "lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal" (Matthew 6:20). This means that we should not be overly attached to our possessions, but rather see them as temporary and fleeting. Instead, we should focus on building our inheritance in heaven, which is a better and lasting possession. As Paul writes, "For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all" (2 Corinthians 4:17).

In practical terms, this means that Christians should be mindful of their consumption and use of possessions. We can do this by being more mindful of our spending, considering the environmental impact of our choices, and being willing to give up our possessions when they no longer serve us or others. We can also think creatively about how to share and reuse our possessions, such as through second-hand stores, garage sales, or simply lending to others. By viewing possessions in this way, we can live a more simple and generous life that reflects our true citizenship in heaven.
