Dealing with the Loss of Independence

The loss of independence can be a difficult and painful experience, especially when it feels like others are trying to control or dictate our lives. However, it's essential to recognize that this feeling of loss is not necessarily a result of others trying to take away our freedom, but rather a reflection of our own desire for autonomy and control. As the Bible teaches, "any steps toward isolation and independence are steps into darkness" (emphasis added). This means that our pursuit of independence can lead us away from God and into a place of darkness and isolation.

So, how do we deal with the loss of independence? First, we need to recognize that our desire for independence is not necessarily a bad thing, but it can become an idol if we prioritize it above our relationship with God. We must remain faithful in our obedience to God and be willing to suffer the humiliation of refusing to be independent if it means going against His will. This requires us to be humble and willing to listen to others, including those who may be trying to help us. It's also essential to recognize that we don't have to go through this experience alone. We can seek out wise counsel from others, such as friends, family, or a mentor, or even try an Al Anon meeting to find support and guidance.

Ultimately, the loss of independence is an opportunity for us to surrender our will to God's and to experience His presence and guidance in our lives. As the Bible teaches, "ask the Lord to put awareness of Himself in you, and your self-awareness will disappear. Then He will be your all in all" (emphasis added). This means that we don't have to be controlled by our own desires and impulses, but we can be controlled by God's Spirit and live a life that is surrendered to Him. By surrendering our independence to God, we can experience true freedom and joy, and live a life that is filled with purpose and meaning.
