Your Question:
can i still have a sense of dignity?
Answer:
As a pastor, I've often grappled with the concept of dignity, especially in the context of our modern society's emphasis on autonomy and self-definition. While I understand the appeal of self-determination, I believe that true dignity is not something we can conjure up on our own. It's not something we can simply assert or choose to ascribe to ourselves. Rather, I believe that our dignity is rooted in our inherent worth and value as human beings, created in the image of God. This perspective is rooted in my Christian faith, which teaches that we are not our own, but rather bondservants of the Lord Jesus Christ. Our dignity is not something we earn or achieve through our own efforts, but rather it is a gift from God, one that is inherent to our very existence. As the Bible teaches, we are created in the image of God, and it is this image that gives us our dignity and worth. This understanding of dignity is not something that can be taken away or diminished, regardless of our circumstances or the opinions of others. In contrast, a self-defined autonomy that sees dignity as something we can choose or not choose to ascribe to ourselves is a recipe for social fracture and chaos. It's a perspective that can lead us to define ourselves out of existence, or to see others as less worthy or dignified than ourselves. As a pastor, I've seen firsthand the devastating effects of this kind of thinking, particularly in the context of mental health and depression. Rather, I believe that our dignity is rooted in our inherent worth and value as human beings, and that it is this understanding that gives us the foundation for true freedom and fulfillment.
