Understanding Faith in the Bible

The Bible teaches that faith is believing in God's character and promises, even when we don't see the outcome. In Romans 4, Paul wrote that Abraham was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully convinced that God was able to do what He had promised (Romans 4:20-21). Faith is not blind trust, but rather trust in God's power and character. As Hebrews 11:1 says, "Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen." This means that faith is not just intellectual assent, but also involves approaching God with confidence in His character and will.

The Essence of Faith

The essence of faith is putting everything in God's hands and then letting Him tell us what to do. This means doing what God wants us to do, not what we desire. Paul writes, "We walk by faith, not by sight" (2 Corinthians 5:7). Faith is more than intellectual assent and involves approaching God with confidence in His character and will. It is not just a matter of knowing the facts, but also trusting in God's power and character. As Romans 10:17 says, "Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ." This means that faith is rooted in the Word of God and is not just a personal feeling or experience.

The Object of Faith

The object of faith is God Himself, not just a set of doctrines or principles. Faith is personal trust in the living God through the living Christ. As 2 Corinthians 4:13 says, "Since we have the same spirit of faith according to what is written, 'I believed, therefore I spoke,' we also believe, therefore we also speak." Faith is not just a mental assent, but also involves speaking and acting in obedience to God. As 1 Peter 1:5 says, "Faith is being kept safe through our trust in God, and the power of God keeps them believing as well as keeping them safe through believing." This means that faith is not just a feeling, but also a commitment to trust in God and obey His will.
