Why Did I Lose My Business?

Losing a business can be a devastating experience, and it's essential to understand the reasons behind such a failure. In many cases, the business owner is to blame for the loss. This could be due to poor financial decisions, lack of planning, or failure to adapt to changing market conditions. For instance, I made some terrible financial decisions early in my ministry that almost put Thomas Road Baptist Church and Liberty University out of business. I was ignorant of big business procedures, but God was gracious and our ministry became stronger because of it.

However, sometimes the reasons for business failure are beyond the control of the business owner. Economic downturns, market fluctuations, and unexpected events can all contribute to a business's demise. In some cases, the business may have been unsustainable from the start, and the owner may have been aware of this but continued to operate it anyway. For example, the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) has struggled financially over the years, with losses exceeding $250 million. Despite this, the network has continued to operate, relying on donations and other forms of support.

In the context of a Christian business, losing a business can be a valuable opportunity for spiritual growth and renewal. As the apostle Paul wrote, "Whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ" (Philippians 3:7). When we lose a business, we may be forced to re-evaluate our priorities and values. This can be a time of great humility and introspection, as we seek to understand what went wrong and how we can improve in the future. Ultimately, losing a business can be a stepping stone to greater success and a deeper relationship with God.
