Why Did I Lose My Business?

Losing a business can be a devastating experience, and it's essential to understand the reasons behind it. As the Bible teaches, "The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty" (Proverbs 21:5). This verse highlights the importance of careful planning and diligence in business. If you've made poor financial decisions, it's not uncommon for businesses to struggle or even fail. This was the case for me when I made some terrible financial decisions early in my ministry that almost put Thomas Road Baptist Church and Liberty University out of business.

However, losing a business can also be a result of external factors beyond your control. Sometimes, the economy, market trends, or unforeseen circumstances can contribute to a business's downfall. For instance, a company may struggle to compete with larger corporations or face unexpected expenses that deplete their resources. In such cases, it's essential to recognize that you're not solely responsible for the outcome. The Bible reminds us that God is sovereign over all creation, and He can bring good out of even the most challenging situations (Romans 8:28).

As a Christian, it's crucial to maintain a right perspective when facing business failures. Rather than blaming others or becoming discouraged, we can learn valuable lessons from our experiences. The Bible teaches that "we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope" (Romans 5:3-4). By trusting in God's sovereignty and seeking wisdom from His Word, we can emerge from business failures stronger, wiser, and more resilient. As Paul wrote, "I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things" (Philippians 3:8). By focusing on our relationship with Christ, we can find hope and redemption even in the midst of business setbacks.
