The Trust Issue: A Biblical Perspective

When it comes to trusting our doctors, it's natural to wonder if they're motivated by a desire to make money off us. While it's true that medical professionals, like anyone else, can be driven by self-interest, we mustn't assume that their primary goal is to exploit us. As Christians, we're called to trust in God's sovereignty over all aspects of life, including the medical profession. This means recognizing that God is ultimately in control, and that our doctors are simply instruments of His care and provision.

The Problem with Circumstantial Faith

When we trust in circumstances rather than in God, we set ourselves up for disappointment and disillusionment. If we rely on our doctors to fix our problems or make us healthy, we're putting our trust in a fallible human being rather than in an all-powerful God. This kind of faith is often referred to as "circumstantial faith," where we trust in God only when things are going well, but doubt or question Him when circumstances don't turn out as we'd like. As the Bible reminds us, "Faith never judges God by circumstances" (Psalm 138:8). Instead, we're called to trust in God's character and promises, even when our circumstances don't align with our desires.

A Biblical Model for Trust

So, how can we develop a biblical model for trust, one that's not based on circumstances or human performance? It starts by recognizing that God is our ultimate source of provision, care, and guidance. When we trust in God, we're not trusting in our doctors or our circumstances, but in the One who is sovereign over all. This means being willing to entrust our lives to God, even when we don't understand the reasons behind our circumstances. As the Bible says, "We live by faith, not by sight" (2 Corinthians 5:7). By trusting in God's character and promises, we can develop a deep and abiding trust that's not shaken by the ups and downs of life. In the words of Jesus, "Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?" (Matthew 6:25). By trusting in God, we can find peace and contentment, even in the midst of uncertainty and doubt.
