The Role of Prayer in Daily Devotions

Prayer is a spiritual discipline that we must diligently exercise. It is a means of communing with God, conforming ourselves to His will, and calling on Him to help others. Through prayer, we express a fundamental trust that God will indeed answer our prayers, in spite of our acknowledgment of sin. Prayer can be a microcosm of the entire spiritual life, and perhaps this is the high possibility behind the command to pray without ceasing (1 Thess. 5:17). Prayer is the link with the Eternal by which we can come to the throne of grace in the power of the Holy Spirit and find grace to help in time of need (Hebrews 4:16).

Prayer has a built-in logic of mediation, directionality, and grain. It is not just about getting things for ourselves, but about creating in ourselves a right attitude with respect to God's will. Jesus taught his disciples to pray for the knowledge of God's will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding (Colossians 1:9-10). Prayer can be a means of discerning God's will, and sometimes we have to be still and listen to Him. We should not be deterred from prayer just because we do not feel like praying or do not know what to pray for. Prayer is not just about getting things done, but about cultivating a deepened willingness to do God's will.

Prayer is essential for daily devotions, and it should characterize the life of every believer. The apostles freed themselves from other responsibilities to give more time to prayer (Acts 6:4). Jesus himself prayed earnestly, and we should follow his example. Prayer is the way that the life of God in us is nourished, and it is our primary portal to joy. It is not just a means of getting things done, but a relationship with God. Through prayer, we can experience the joy and peace that comes from being with Jesus. As we cultivate a deeper prayer life, we can develop a stronger faith and overcome obstacles in our lives. Prayer is the key to reaching our dreams and living a life that is pleasing to God.
