The Problem of Suffering

The problem of suffering is a difficult question that has puzzled many people, including those who believe in God. It is often asked, "How could a loving God allow so much suffering in the world?" This question is rooted in the idea that suffering is evil and that a good God would not permit it.

In response to this question, some argue that the problem of suffering is not a problem at all. They suggest that suffering can be a means of producing a deeper knowledge of God and that innocent human suffering can provide an occasion for deeper dependency and trust in God. Others argue that God may have created countless worlds, including the one we live in, where suffering is balanced by good, and that our world may be one of those worlds.

The Bible teaches that God is sovereign over all creation, including our suffering. The prophet Isaiah calls Jesus, the Messiah, a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief. This means that Jesus is not a remote deity, watching suffering from a safe distance, but rather He is the God who inhabits our suffering. Our understanding of God's goodness and His relationship with us is rooted in our relationship with Jesus Christ. When we suffer, it is an opportunity to find God in our suffering and to understand His purpose in our lives. Our goal is not to understand everything about God's sovereignty, but to know God and to trust Him, even in the midst of suffering.
