The Biblical Perspective on Sickness

The Bible teaches that God is sovereign over all creation, including our physical bodies. While we are not immune to illness, the Bible encourages us to trust in God's goodness and sovereignty even in the midst of sickness. Job, a righteous man who suffered greatly, did not sin against God despite his physical afflictions (Job 1:21-22). Instead, he trusted in God's sovereignty and acknowledged that God gave him his life and his health (Job 1:21).

The Christian Response to Sickness

As Christians, we are called to prioritize our spiritual health over our physical health. While taking care of our bodies is important, we should not make health our main objective. Instead, we should seek to glorify God in all aspects of our lives, including our physical well-being. When we are sick, we can trust in God's goodness and sovereignty, just as Job did. We can also seek medical attention and take steps to alleviate our symptoms, just as Jesus did when he healed the sick (Matthew 4:23-24). However, we should not rely solely on medical treatment or medication to heal our bodies, but rather seek to trust in God's power to heal and restore us.

Living with Sickness

When we are too sick to work, it can be a challenging and isolating experience. However, the Bible encourages us to trust in God's goodness and sovereignty, even in the midst of illness. We can seek to glorify God by trusting in his power to heal and restore us, even when we are unable to work. We can also seek to serve others and glorify God through our suffering, just as Paul did when he wrote, "We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope" (Romans 5:3-4). By trusting in God's sovereignty and goodness, we can find hope and peace in the midst of sickness, even when we are unable to work.
