The Biblical Perspective on Sickness and Work

As a Christian, we must approach the question of what happens when we are too sick to work with a biblical perspective. The Bible teaches us that God created us to work and to rest (Genesis 2:2-3). However, it also teaches us that we are not to neglect our health or well-being (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). In fact, the Bible commands us to "endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children" (Hebrews 12:7). This means that when we are sick, we should not see it as a curse or a punishment, but rather as an opportunity to trust in God's sovereignty and goodness.

The Bible also teaches us that God is a God who heals (Exodus 15:26). In fact, Jesus himself healed many people during his ministry, including those who were sick (Matthew 9:35; Mark 1:34). This means that when we are too sick to work, we should not give up hope. Instead, we should seek medical attention and trust in God's power to heal us. As the psalmist writes, "He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds" (Psalm 147:3). This does not mean that we will always be healed in the way that we want, but it does mean that God is always working for our good, even in the midst of sickness.

Practical Applications

So what does this mean for us in practical terms? When we are too sick to work, we should not feel guilty or ashamed. Instead, we should seek rest and recovery, and trust in God's sovereignty and goodness. We should also seek medical attention and trust in God's power to heal us. This may involve taking time off work, or seeking help from family and friends. Ultimately, our goal should be to trust in God's goodness and sovereignty, even in the midst of sickness. As the Bible teaches, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28). This means that even when we are too sick to work, we can trust in God's goodness and sovereignty, and know that he is always working for our good.
