Your Question:
What do I do with the fear of death?
Answer:
As a pastor, I've seen many people struggle with the fear of death. It's natural to fear the unknown, but Jesus teaches us to fear the one who has authority to throw us into hell after our bodies have been killed. That's the one we should fear, not death itself. When we focus on God's power and authority, we can begin to see that death is not the ultimate disaster we think it is. In fact, Jesus says that people who can kill the body can do no more. Their power extends no further. We should not fear those whose powers are so limited. Instead, we should fear God, who has power to cast into hell. When we have the fear of the Lord, God promises to deliver us from our enemies, protect us from evil, and show us mercy. He also promises to give us riches and honor, supply everything we need, and reveal all we need to know. To deal with the fear of death, we need to confront it head-on. We need to confess our fears as unbelief and examine Scripture to see God's love and faithfulness. We need to ask ourselves, "Lord, I don't believe you, or Lord, my desires want something other than what you promised?" We need to look to Jesus and be confident in His love and faithfulness. When we do, we'll find that we can make quicker transitions from fear to faith.
