Can I still find purpose and meaning in life after losing my identity as a business owner?

Reevaluating Identity and Purpose

Losing one's identity as a business owner can be a significant challenge, but it's not a dead-end street. In fact, it can be an opportunity to reevaluate and rediscover one's purpose and identity. As sociologist Robert Bellah notes, our identity is not solely defined by our possessions or external circumstances. Rather, it's a constancy over time that consists of commitments, roles, or activities that we hold onto. From a Christian perspective, our identity is rooted in our relationship with God, and we find ourselves not in the depths of our psychology but in the depths of God's love and redemption.

Discovering New Purpose and Meaning

Just like a map can change due to unforeseen circumstances, our life plan may need to be updated. This can be a difficult process, but it's not a reason to give up. We can still find purpose and meaning in life by keeping our commitments and holding onto our values. As the Bible says, "If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved" (Romans 10:9). This new identity as a sinner saved by grace is a brand-new creation, as 2 Corinthians 5:17 points out. We are not defined by our past experiences or external circumstances but by our relationship with Jesus Christ.

Embracing a New Identity

In losing our identity as a business owner, we may feel like we've lost our sense of self-worth. However, this is not the end. We can still find purpose and meaning in life by embracing our new identity as a follower of Christ. This means living out our commitments, roles, or activities in a way that reflects our values and relationship with God. As the Bible says, "You were born again to a brand-new life" (2 Corinthians 5:17). We are not defined by our past but by our new life in Christ. By embracing this new identity, we can find purpose and meaning in life, even in the midst of change and uncertainty.
