How do I trust God when I'm scared?
The Nature of Fear and Trust
When we are scared, it's natural to feel a sense of fear and anxiety. However, the Bible teaches us that fear and trust are not mutually exclusive. In fact, the Bible says that we can trust God even when we're afraid (Ps. 56:3). This is not to say that we should ignore our fears or pretend they don't exist, but rather that we should acknowledge them and bring them to God in prayer. By confessing our fears as unbelief, we can begin to transition from fear to faith.
The Role of the Fear of the Lord
The Bible also teaches us that the fear of the Lord is essential to our response to fear. This may seem counterintuitive, but the fear of the Lord is not about being afraid of God, but rather about having a deep respect and reverence for Him. When we fear God, we are acknowledging His power and authority, and we are trusting in His goodness and love. This fear of the Lord can actually give us courage and strength to face our fears, rather than being paralyzed by them. As Jesus said, "Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you" (Luke 10:19).
Overcoming Fear through Trust
So how can we overcome our fears and trust in God? The Bible teaches us that trust is a choice that we must make every day. We must believe steadfastly on God and everything that challenges us will strengthen our faith. This requires us to be continually testing our faith, even in the midst of uncertainty and fear. As the Bible says, "But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries" (Hebrews 3:13-14). By choosing to trust God, even when we're scared, we can experience His peace and strength, and find the courage to face whatever challenges come our way.
