Your Question:
Why me? Why does it have to be me?
Answer:
The question "Why me? Why does it have to be me?" is one that I've grappled with in my own life, particularly in my role as a pastor. As I reflect on this question, I'm reminded of the words of Saint Benedict, who asks us to consider, "Who am I becoming?" This question gets to the heart of our spiritual formation and the kind of person we're becoming. Are we becoming the kind of person that we wish to be, or are we allowing our circumstances to shape us into someone else? As I look at my own life, I'm aware that I'm not perfect. I have my own flaws and shortcomings, and I'm constantly striving to become a better version of myself. But in my imperfection, I'm reminded that I'm not alone. I'm part of a community, a family, and a church that is also striving to become more like Christ. And in that community, I'm finding that I'm becoming a person who is more like him, more like the person God created me to be. In my relationship with my wife Susan, I'm learning that I'm becoming a person who is more like her, more like my other half. We're two imperfect people, trying to become a perfect whole. And in that process, I'm finding that I'm becoming a person who is more like Christ, more like the person God created me to be. It's a journey, not a destination, and it's one that I'm grateful to be on.
