When love is tested, what does it reveal about our true nature?

Love is a fundamental aspect of the Christian faith, and it is a quality that is essential for a genuine Christian life. As John writes, "Love is the final objective test of our Christian profession" (1 John 4:7-12). When love is tested, it reveals our true nature, and it is a reflection of our relationship with God. In 1 John 3:14, John writes, "We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love each other." This indicates that love is a sure sign of spiritual life, and it is a quality that is born out of a personal relationship with God.

The Bible teaches that true love is not natural to human beings in their fallen state. Rather, it is a fruit of the Holy Spirit that is produced in those who are born again. As Galatians 5:22-23 states, "The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control." When love is tested, it reveals whether we have the Holy Spirit living within us, guiding and empowering us to live a life of love. As John writes, "No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us" (1 John 4:12).

When love is tested, it also reveals our priorities and values. As Jesus taught, "Love your neighbor as yourself" (Mark 12:31). When we love others, it shows that we value their well-being and happiness above our own. This is a reflection of our relationship with God, who loves us and values our well-being above all else.
