When love is tested, what does it reveal about our true nature?

Love is the final objective test of our Christian profession, for true love, in the sense of self-sacrifice, is not natural to human beings in their fallen state. Its existence in anyone is evidence of new birth and spiritual life. The Bible teaches that love is the surest test of having life, as it is the test of being in the light (2:10). When love is tested, it reveals whether we have truly been transformed by God's Spirit, and whether we are walking in the light of Christ's teachings.

In 1 John 3:11-18, the Apostle John emphasizes the importance of love as a test of our character. He writes, "This is to know that we are in him who is sent, that we love in him, and that we have come to know and believe the love that he has for us. God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them." (1 John 4:16, ESV) This passage highlights the social test of love, which is a crucial aspect of demonstrating our faith in action. When we love others, we demonstrate our commitment to God's teachings and our willingness to put others before ourselves.

When love is tested, it reveals our true nature, whether we are living a life that is transformed by God's Spirit or still walking in the darkness of our fallen human nature. As the Apostle John writes, "Those who do not love their brothers and sisters, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen."
