The Barrier to Lasting Love

When we're feeling tired or stuck, we may struggle to show love to others. This can be due to various reasons, such as our own emotional immaturity, hostility, or feelings of inadequacy. We may also be seeking love from others to fill the void within us, rather than recognizing that our true needs can be met only in and by God. As the Bible says, "We love because he first loved us" (1 John 4:19). If we love others with the expectation of receiving love in return, we may be disappointed.

Recognizing Our True Needs

To dismantle the barrier to lasting love, we need to recognize that our true needs can never be fully met by fellow humans. We are wired to seek love and affection, but this can lead us to pursue relationships that are based on emotional highs rather than genuine connection. As the Bible teaches, "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud" (1 Corinthians 13:4). We need to change our emotional focus and look to God as the source of our love and fulfillment. This means recognizing that our true identity and worth come from being loved by God, rather than seeking validation from others.

The Power of God's Love

When we are filled with the love of God, we are empowered to love others in a way that is patient, kind, and selfless. As the Bible says, "The love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit" (Romans 5:5). This love works through us and comes in contact with everyone we meet. By recognizing our true needs and seeking to love others with the love of God, we can break down the barriers to lasting love and build relationships that are truly personal, intimate, and fulfilling. We can love others not because we expect to receive love in return, but because we have been loved by God and are empowered to love others in the same way. This is the key to experiencing love that truly lasts and relationships that are truly satisfying.
