Understanding God's Reasons for Suffering

When we question why God allows suffering, we are attempting to reduce Him to human terms and subject Him to our moral judgment. However, God's reasons for permitting suffering may be beyond our comprehension. He may have overriding reasons for allowing suffering in the world, such as to bring about a greater good or to discipline us for our own good. Just as we permit suffering in order to bring about a greater good, God may have similar reasons for allowing suffering. We must acknowledge that God's perspective is different from ours and that He has a plan to eliminate pain and suffering from this world.

The Purpose of Suffering

Suffering can be a result of living in a sinful, fallen world, and sometimes it is because God is disciplining us for our own good. However, in all cases, we are assured by Romans 8:28 that God works all things together for our good. Suffering can also be a means for God to work grace into His people. If God rewarded us immediately, we would be destroyed because of our inherent depravity. The gap of suffering allows God to work in our lives and to bring us closer to Him. In this sense, suffering is not pointless or unnecessary, but rather a means for God to achieve His purposes.

Trusting God in Suffering

When we undergo suffering, we must turn to God and trust Him with the mysteries of suffering. We may not understand God's reasons for permitting suffering, but we can trust that those reasons are for our ultimate good. We must also recognize that Jesus is the God who inhabits our suffering and that He is the end, not just a means to an end. He is the one who underwent incomprehensible suffering for us because He loves us so much. When God asks us to undergo suffering, we must trust Him and have hope that He has a plan to bring us through it. We can also find comfort in knowing that God is delaying punishment to give us a chance to accept His sacrificial offer of Jesus. In the end, there is a way home, and we can appreciate that.
