Reconciling Our Desire for Safety with the Call to Take Risks for God

The Paradox of Safety and Risk

We often desire safety and security, yet God calls us to take risks and trust in Him. This paradox is rooted in our human nature, which seeks to control and manipulate our circumstances. However, as the psalmist says, "The Lord is my rock, my salvation; whom shall I fear?" (Psalm 91:2). Our safety and security come from trusting in God's sovereignty and provision. We must learn to balance our desire for safety with the call to take risks for God, trusting that He is working all things for our good (Romans 8:28).

The Dangers of Overemphasizing Safety

There are dangers in overemphasizing safety and security. If we rely too heavily on our own efforts to protect ourselves, we may miss out on the opportunity to trust in God's sovereignty. We may also become complacent and neglect to take risks for God's kingdom. Furthermore, if we focus too much on avoiding danger, we may become anxious and fearful, rather than trusting in God's goodness and provision. As the Bible says, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God" (Philippians 4:6).

Trusting in God's Sovereignty

To reconcile our desire for safety with the call to take risks for God, we must trust in His sovereignty and provision. We must recognize that God is working all things for our good, even in the midst of danger and uncertainty. We must also learn to trust in His goodness and love, even when things do not go as we plan. As the psalmist says, "The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit" (Psalm 34:18). By trusting in God's sovereignty and provision, we can find peace and security, even in the midst of uncertainty and risk. We can be confident that God is working all things for our good, and that He will never leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5).
