The Heart of Depression

As you read this book, youre probably aware of your own thoughts related to its contents your feelings, sensations, ideas, and desires resulting from what youve read so far. You are having a conscious experience. Consciousness poses one of the most fundamental problems in philosophy: how can we be certain that our conscious experiences are not just illusions or deceptions? This question is particularly relevant when it comes to depression, as it can be difficult to distinguish between the symptoms of depression and the natural fluctuations of mood that everyone experiences.

Depression can be a complex and multifaceted issue, and it is not always easy to pinpoint a single cause. However, the Bible suggests that one of the primary causes of depression is the loss of self, which can be attributed to a lack of spiritual vitality and a failure to deny oneself. When we lose ourselves in following Christ, we actually find ourselves. True self-denial is true self-discovery. This concept is rooted in the idea that our true identity is found in our relationship with God, and that when we prioritize our relationship with Him, we are able to discover our true selves.

The Bible also teaches that our hearts are prone to deceit and that we can be deceived by our own thoughts and feelings. This is evident in the passage where it says, "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; Who can know it?" (Jeremiah 17:9). This means that we need to be careful not to rely solely on our own feelings and thoughts to determine our spiritual state. Instead, we need to examine our hearts and lives in light of God's Word and seek His guidance and wisdom. By doing so, we can gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and our struggles with depression, and we can find the hope and help we need to overcome them.
