Your Question:

Can I still have a sense of peace if I'm struggling with anxiety?

Answer:

As a pastor, I've seen many people struggle with anxiety, and I've struggled with it myself. I believe that inner peace is impossible unless it is received from Jesus. When our Lord speaks peace, He creates peace, because the words that He speaks are always spirit, and they are life (John 6:63). I've found that my own sense of peace is directly tied to my relationship with Jesus.

For me, inner peace is not just a feeling, but a choice. When I'm struggling with anxiety, I remind myself that I've received a peace that comes from looking into Jesus' face and fully understanding and receiving His quiet contentment. I try to align my schedule with my values, as Stephen Covey once said, and I seek to become a non-anxious presence in the world. This doesn't mean I don't struggle with anxiety, but I've learned to pray and seek the Lord's presence in the midst of it.

I've found that prayer and the presence of other believers can be incredibly powerful in calming anxiety. When I'm struggling, I ask two or more strong believers to pray with me, and I seek to meditate on the Lord's Prayer and make it my own. I've also learned to recognize when I'm trying to hold onto anxiety or anger, and I pray for the Lord to search me and reveal any lingering emotions. By staying in the process and seeking the Lord's presence, I've found that I can experience a sense of peace even in the midst of anxiety.
