Can Our Faith Be a Source of Comfort in Times of War?

As Christians, we often forget that we are in a spiritual war. This war is not like traditional warfare, where we know we are at war and can prepare accordingly. In this spiritual war, we may not even realize we are in a battle. However, we can derive comfort from the fact that God is sovereign and in control, even in the midst of war. He is the one who sustains and governs all creation, and He is the one who gives us the spiritual provisions we need to overcome the enemy. If we yield to the desires that wage war against our souls, we will inevitably feel some loss of spiritual vitality and not be focused on the circumstances. But if we feed our faith with facts, not with feeling, we can find comfort in God's sovereignty and provision.

Faith is not just a feeling or a warm religious emotion, but it is the knowledge that we walk before God who hears us. As Psalm 88 shows, even in the midst of darkness and despair, God is still present and hears our prayers. We can trust in God's sovereignty and provision, even when things seem bleak. In fact, faith is the foundation of all the virtues that enable us to live a life that is pleasing to God. Without faith, it is impossible to be well-pleasing unto God. Therefore, we can find comfort in our faith, even in times of war, as we trust in God's sovereignty and provision.

The New Testament teaches us that we are in a spiritual war, and that our protection comes from God Himself (Ephesians 6:10-20). We are not to fight the enemy with carnal weapons, but with spiritual weapons that are mighty in God for pulling down strongholds and casting down arguments that exalt themselves against the knowledge of God (2 Corinthians 10:3-5). As we face the challenges of war, we can find comfort in our faith, knowing that God is with us and that He will give us the strength and provision we need to overcome the enemy. We can trust in God's sovereignty and provision, even when things seem bleak, and find comfort in our faith as we walk before God who hears us.
