The Nature of God's Goodness

The question of whether God is still good if we are suffering is a complex and deeply personal one. On the one hand, it is easy to feel that God is not good when we are experiencing pain and hardship. However, the Bible teaches us that God's goodness is not limited by our circumstances. In fact, God's goodness is not even measured by our circumstances. His goodness is rooted in His character, not in our experiences. As the Bible says, "God is good to all, and his mercy is over all that he has made" (Psalm 145:9). This means that God's goodness is not something that can be taken away or diminished by our suffering.

God's Sovereignty and Our Suffering

It is also important to remember that God is sovereign over all things, including our suffering. This means that God is not surprised by our pain and hardship, and He is not powerless to stop it. However, God's sovereignty does not mean that He is the cause of our suffering. Instead, He is the one who is working all things together for our good, even in the midst of pain and hardship (Romans 8:28). This means that our suffering is not meaningless or without purpose. Instead, it is an opportunity for us to trust in God's goodness and sovereignty, even when we don't understand what is happening.

The Value of Suffering

Finally, it is worth noting that suffering can have value and purpose, even if we don't understand it at the time. As the Bible says, "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance" (James 1:2-3). This means that our suffering can be an opportunity for us to grow in our faith and to become more like Christ. It may not be easy or pleasant, but it can be a valuable and transformative experience that helps us to become more like our Lord. As we trust in God's goodness and sovereignty, even in the midst of suffering, we can find joy and purpose in our pain.
